Chemistry, a Mystery?

I have ever been a student of Chemistry
Wandering through a maze of atoms
Arranged into a series of stratums
But exit remained always a mystery

Kekule dreamt of slithering snakes,
Mendeleev stacking up periodic table
Curie finding isotopes that are unstable
The geniuses playing for high stakes

Chemistry after all is  advanced alchemy
By which we are perpetually stymied
But then life is a complex reaction
Of action, inaction and non-action
Fun is in playing the game

Even if the end is tragically tame

SONNET OF SONNETS

Leafing through the pages of Captain’s log
Of meandering voyages through sea and sand
In the dusk’s fading hours relaxing inland
Looking for glimmering light through dense fog

Assessing the gains and losses of time
Skirmishes won and tough battles lost
Straggling at last through the winning post
Realized in the end that life was a mime

Agonies endless had been many a score
Ecstasies have been not less but more
Countless have I shed bushels of tears
Have haunted by numerous endless fears
Yet  happily do I set down this song

Counting seconds ticking till the final GONG

Telephone

Oh, the time tested Instrument of communication!
Conveyor of messages of distress, as well as joy!
You have been a weapon , shield or even amusing toy
Harbinger of depression or quite often of elation!

In the beginning you were  black and massive
Had no dials but a speaking tube and a earpiece
The connection hard to get being a tease
Our efforts were largely futile and passive

Then came instruments with rotary dials
Sapped energy needing vitamins from vials
Touch tones and fancy colors were next
Graduating to augment voice with text
Yet you never had for effect a chance
Against what women can convey with a glance
